The calibration did not start with pain.

It started with my hands going numb, spreading from the device's contact points up through my palms and into my wrists in a slow even progression, not the sharp needles of circulation cut off but something more deliberate, like the feeling going out of a limb that has been positioned in exactly the right place to quietly lose itself. The device stayed warm throughout. The numbness traveled independently of the warmth, both conditions present simultaneously, which was the first genuinely strange physical experience of the whole process because the human nervous system does not typically produce those two states in the same tissue at the same time.

I told Sonn about it. They made a note.

The next thing was visual, and it was the hardest to describe. The research bay did not change in any measurable way. Sonn was still across from me, monitoring display between us, the warped light panel still throwing its slightly wrong angle of light across the upper left corner of the space. But the density of what I was processing from all of it had increased again, not the jump from the initial contact, something more gradual, a slow pressurization of detail. This was internal, a cold that ran from my core outward, and it arrived over about fifteen seconds, not sudden enough to be a shock but fast enough that I was aware of the progression. It resolved in six. My system noted the discrepancy without assigning meaning to it.

The next phase was the one that Sonn had tried to describe and hadn't quite managed. What they'd said was that the calibration would run my stress-response patterns. What that meant in practice was that my body cycled through its library of physical stress states without any of the external conditions that had originally produced them, the way you might hear a piece of music and your body moves toward the emotion the music trained it to associate, except the music was absent and only the physical state arrived.

My forearms read the muscle tension of drawing a bowstring I wasn't holding. My calves registered the specific fatigue of sitting motionless on a cold ground stand for three hours before legal shooting light. My hands registered the grip pressure of the rifle's stock, the exact weight of the Remington at full draw, the familiar roughness of the hand-fitted grip my grandfather had made. I had not expected the specificity. I'd expected something more like a fever dream, the disordered half-coherent associations of a system under stress. "No." My voice came out flat, which was accurate to my state. Not distressed. Present. "It ran the beam transit. The initial abduction."

Sonn was quiet for a moment. "The system will prioritize the highest-intensity stress events for the most thorough mapping. I should have anticipated that. I apologize."

"It's done. What's the reading look like."

They turned the monitoring display slightly so I could see the edge of it, though the notation was in a system I couldn't parse. "Stable and progressive. You are processing exceptionally cleanly." A pause. "Most of the Thuvari cases involved significant emotional disruption during the stress-response phase. Agitation, distress vocalization, in one case an attempt to put the device down. You have not." Another pause. "That is significant, I believe, to what you will develop."

What I do under pressure is what it builds on. A system that had just spent four-plus minutes running through my stress library now had every data point it needed.

The cold was gone. The numbness was gone. My hands felt normal except for the device's warmth and the increasing reciprocal pressure, and the heightened spatial detail of the room had settled at another new baseline, sharper than the level it had settled at after the cold phase, not dramatically sharper but measurably so. But a sustained mid-grade nausea that settled below the diaphragm and stayed there with a persistence that made it more draining than a sharper episode would have been, because there was nothing to resolve and no useful response to make. I sat with it the way I sat with the cold. The station's training deck hummed somewhere down the corridor. I had been aware of it intermittently throughout the calibration; now it was a distinct sound with a specific frequency. Positional awareness, which you have already noticed." They gestured at the room. "And object tracking. Your visual system is processing motion across a wider field than before with more simultaneous targets. This is the beginning of what you might recognize as being able to watch several things at once without the usual degradation at the periphery."

I thought about the training deck. The marker grid. The way I'd been watching Harren and tracking three other markers through my peripheral field and felt the signal degradation when I tried to take in more. "How many."

"At your current stage, probably four to six simultaneous objects with meaningful resolution. Before the calibration, your normal human baseline would have been two, possibly three, before peripheral degradation reduced accuracy significantly." Sonn folded their hands on the table. "This is stage one."

"You said that. An unknown number of stages."

"Yes. The gap between stage one and what a Dominion soldier displays after years of active use." Sonn paused. "I want to be precise about what that gap means, so you are not expecting more than the calibration has produced. You are faster by a margin too small to be obvious in normal movement. You will notice it first in decisions, not in physical action. Your body will be processing the input to decide before the decision feels like it should be ready. That lag reduction compounds."

I picked up a wrench from the equipment rack along the wall. Not a reason for it. I just wanted something to test the reading against.

It will not feel as acute as it does right now, once your nervous system adjusts to processing the increased input as normal rather than as elevated signal." They watched me. "But it will not return to where it was before you touched the device."

I pulled out the stool at the equipment rack's end and sat on it, because Sonn had said not to stand immediately and I was going to move around but not immediately. My legs were fine. My hands were fine. The nausea was gone and the cold was gone. What I was cataloguing instead of feelings was the gap between what I'd expected the calibration to do and what it had actually done.

I hadn't expected the muted state at the end, the thirty minutes of reduced signal, which in retrospect I understood as the system running a check on the changes it had made, confirming they were stable before restoring normal processing.

I had expected something more like a medical procedure: something done to me, with clear before and after states. What the calibration had been was more like being read, thoroughly, by something that then made decisions based on what it found. The before and after states were real, measurable, present. The procedure had just been more collaborative than I'd anticipated.

Which fit what Sonn had said from the beginning. The system amplifies what's already there. To amplify it, it had to know what it was working with.

"Derek," Sonn said, and the careful quality was back in a specific way, the way it went when they were about to say something they'd been holding for a moment. "The rate at which the calibration completed, and the depth of the baseline mapping, the monitoring reads show a thoroughness I have not seen in any of the recorded Thuvari cases." A pause. "I want to say that as information, not as cause for concern, because I do not know yet what it predicts about your development rate. But I wanted you to have it."

"Is it in the concerning range."

"No. It is in the fast range. Which is different." They met my eyes. "The concerning range involves acceleration of the rate of change, not the rate itself. What we have here is a fast rate that has been consistent. Consistent is not concerning."

I filed this as Sonn's honest assessment, which I'd learned to trust in the weeks of working with them, and set it alongside the wrench and the hinge gap and the three-note monitoring display and the warmth that had taken fifteen seconds to dissipate from my palms.

"What happens tomorrow," I said.

"You sleep, and your nervous system integrates the new processing baseline, and in the morning you will notice things you cannot notice now because your brain will have had time to learn the new signal level." Sonn stood, moving to return the monitoring display to its standard position. "And then Durrik will run his assessment, and we will have concrete numbers for what stage one has produced."

"And the system is still running."

"The system is always running. The calibration is complete but the integration continues. Every stress input from this point forward is processed by the calibration's mapping. Every novel situation your nervous system encounters is read by the pattern the device established tonight." They looked at me from across the room. "It will not stop."

I sat on the equipment stool and held that for a moment. The station hummed its station sounds. The forty-nine-second air cycle ran. The warped light panel threw its off-angle light across the corner of the research bay, and I could now see clearly that the warp was a three-centimeter bow in the casing's left bracket, the fastener on that side loose by about a quarter turn.

None of those things required my attention.

I was giving them my attention anyway, because that was what the new baseline did with idle processing: filled it. I would need to learn what to filter. The high spatial awareness Durrik had noted in the assessment and said was worth keeping had always had a practical off switch, the capacity to run it low when the situation didn't require it. I wasn't sure the off switch was available in the same way anymore.

That was something to figure out. Not tonight.

I stood, because my legs were ready and Sonn's caution had been about the immediate aftermath, not the full duration of rest after. The room came with me as I stood, spatial information reorganizing around my new vertical position in the room with a fluidity that had not been there before.

"Thank you," I said.

"You stayed the whole three hours and fourteen minutes. You told me the truth about what was coming." I got my bearings. The door behind me. The corridor, the bunk assignment, the forty minutes of station time that had probably passed while I sat in here, replaced now by whatever the schedule showed. "That's worth acknowledging."

Sonn was quiet for a moment. Their hands rested at their sides, not clasped, just resting. "You are the most cooperative subject the Thuvari integration records contain," they said finally. "I did not expect that, from the initial briefings."

"I'm not cooperative," I said. "I just don't fight things that are already done."

The device sat on the research bay table where I'd set it. It had returned to its resting state: gray-green surface with the faint blue at the edges of the contact areas, warm without source, light-absorbing in a way that made it look like a shadow of an object rather than the object itself. I had held it for three hours and fourteen minutes and it had spent that time reading me at a rate faster than any Thuvari case in the records.

I didn't look at it any longer than I needed to confirm that assessment. Then I pulled the research bay door open, the gap at the left hinge registering as my hand passed it, two point three millimeters, and walked into the corridor.

The station at this hour was lower traffic, a few crew members on rotation shifts, the equipment and maintenance personnel running their standard overnight checks. I registered all of them in my peripheral field with a resolution that was going to take some getting used to: not a threat assessment, just an awareness, each person carrying their specific movement pattern and speed, individually distinct in a way that crowd awareness usually flattened. I could see the slight favoring of a left leg in the maintenance worker at the far end of the corridor, old injury or current fatigue, and I wasn't sure I'd have noticed that yesterday.

The bunk assignment was a five-minute walk. I made it in five minutes and lay down on the narrow station-issue surface with my hands on my chest, palms up, because the slight raised texture of the bunk's covering material was registering differently now and I wanted to assess the distraction level before committing to a sleeping position.

Manageable. Everything was manageable. The distraction level was present but not disruptive, a heightened signal that my nervous system was already starting to reclassify from elevated-input to normal-input, the way you stop hearing the refrigerator after the first few minutes in a new house.

The station's systems ran their overnight routines. The air cycle counted its intervals. Somewhere in the forward section, Durrik was probably already running a revised assessment schedule for zero eight hundred, because Durrik prepared for things the way I checked fence lines: thoroughly, before anyone asked.

My hands, palms up on my chest, felt the weight of the device's absence the way you feel a tooth you've been pressing with your tongue and then stopped.

The system was running. It would not stop. Everything stress-input from this point forward, every novel situation, every decision under pressure, processed by the mapping the calibration had built from three hours and fourteen minutes of my entire stress library.

I was no longer fully what I'd been when I'd walked in.

The question of whether that was good or bad was less useful than the question of what it meant for the next thing, which was the assessment in the morning, and after that, the training program, and after that, whatever came next in the sequence of things I'd committed to figuring out by doing them.

I was curious about the assessment. Not eager.

Which was still, probably, as honest as I could be.

My hands settled against my chest and I closed my eyes and let the station's sounds run at their new, slightly more detailed resolution, and the system, which would not stop, ran its quiet inventory of the room.
