The Device Is Not What He Expected

Sonn had arranged the research bay differently than the last time I'd been in it. The equipment table had been pushed to the left wall, the seating reconfigured so there was open floor space between the door and the central worktable, and on that worktable, resting on a square of close-woven dark fabric that wasn't quite cloth and wasn't quite foam, was the device.

Sonn stood beside the table with their hands clasped at waist level, watching me come in. They had positioned themselves slightly to the right of the artifact, not blocking it, not presenting it, just standing near it the way you might stand near something you wanted a person to approach at their own speed.

I approached at my own speed, which was measured.

The device was smaller than I'd expected from Sonn's descriptions. River stone was accurate: roughly oval, flattened to maybe three centimeters at its thickest, perhaps fifteen centimeters along its longest axis. The surface was a color between gray and green that shifted depending on the angle, not iridescent but not uniform either, like the underside of a lichen-covered rock from the creek behind the back pasture. It sat on its fabric square without any obvious orientation, no face or back, no visible seam or joint.

"You can take your time," Sonn said.

"I know." I stopped at the table edge and looked at it from standing height. No visible power source. No connection ports. No indicator lights or surface markings. Nothing that read as technology in any register I had a frame for. "Is it active right now."

"Passively. It has been in this state continuously since the Thuvari research council removed it from storage eleven months ago. The passive state generates no measurable field output."

"But it's warm."

"Yes." Sonn's hands shifted slightly at their waist. "Even in storage it maintained approximately four degrees above ambient temperature. The energy source for that is one of the things we have not identified."

I leaned in slightly. The surface had a quality I couldn't name from this distance, something in how it held the light from the bay's overhead panels that was not quite reflective and not quite matte. I asked: "When you said it responds to pressure. What does that look like."

Sonn moved to the table's opposite side, reached out, and pressed two fingertips lightly against the surface near the artifact's narrower end. The material didn't deform. But the color quality changed under and around Sonn's touch, the gray-green deepening toward something closer to blue for the two seconds of contact, then returning to baseline when Sonn withdrew. Not glowing. Not mechanical. The way the surface of water changes color when a cloud passes, except in reverse.

"That's all," Sonn said. "In passive state. The response to a compatible biology is significantly different."

"How different."

Sonn took a breath that took slightly longer than normal. "The Thuvari records describe it as an active response. The material becomes more responsive to pressure, more fluid at the surface layer without becoming liquid. The color change becomes more pronounced and extends further from the contact point. There is a noticeable warmth increase." A pause. "For a Thuvari with agricultural integration, the response was enough to be clearly visible from across a room."

"And for a first contact. Before any integration."

"The records on initial contact vary." Sonn moved their hands apart and then back together, a small deliberate movement I'd started cataloguing as their equivalent of choosing words carefully. "Some describe a strong immediate response. Some describe almost nothing on first contact, with the full response developing over the first calibration session. The variation correlates with compatibility score, in general terms."

My compatibility score was the highest in Sonn's documented records. I didn't bring this up.

"What do I do," I said. "Mechanics. Step by step."

"You pick it up." Sonn said this plainly. "That is the first step. There is no ceremony. No preparation required on your part beyond what you are doing now. The Thuvari theory is that the system begins reading neurological pattern from the first sustained contact, which means the more naturally you handle it, the cleaner the initial data it collects."

"So I shouldn't try to do anything specific."

"Correct. Do not perform for it. Handle it the way you would handle any unfamiliar tool you were evaluating."

That was an instruction I understood without needing elaboration. I stripped off my jacket and draped it over the chair nearest the door, not for any procedural reason, just because I didn't want to be hampered in the hands if something required a physical response. Old habit from working with equipment I hadn't used before.

Sonn's attention moved to this action without comment.

I came back to the table. The device sat where it was, the same gray-green quality, the same flat oval shape, unchanged by my preparation or my hesitation or any of the preceding conversation. It was not watching me. Whatever the Thuvari theory said about it reading intent, it had no eyes and no obvious sensor apparatus and the passive warmth it generated was probably not directed at anything.

I picked it up.

The weight was wrong. Not heavy and not light in any way that mapped to its apparent density. My hands registered something closer to the weight of a full water glass than a stone of that size and composition should produce, slightly heavier than expected but not dramatically so, the kind of weight discrepancy you notice and then recalibrate to within a second or two. The surface against my palms was warm, Sonn had been accurate about that, and the texture was faintly granular in a way that had more to do with pressure than with touch, as though the material had a very small amount of give at the surface layer that regular stone wouldn't.

I turned it over.

The back, if it had a back, was identical to the front. The edge was slightly beveled, not sharp, rounded enough to not be uncomfortable in the hand. I ran my thumb along the edge from one end to the other the way I'd check the blade geometry on a new pocketknife.

The color was changing.

Not dramatically. Not the way I'd half-expected from Sonn's description, no luminescence, no spreading glow. But the gray-green had deepened in the areas where my palms made full contact, drifting toward the same blue I'd seen under Sonn's fingertips, and that blue was richer and held longer and extended further from the contact point than Sonn's touch had produced.

Sonn made a sound that wasn't quite speech.

I looked up.

Their hands had uncoupled at the waist and their arms had dropped slightly, both hands visible at their sides, and they were watching the device with an expression I'd learned to read over three conversations: the specific stillness of Sonn calibrating between what they had prepared to see and what they were actually seeing. Their eyes tracked the color distribution across the artifact's surface and then moved to my hands and back to the surface.

"That is a strong initial response," they said. Their voice was level. The careful quality that preceded important statements was present in it.

"Is this the normal range for first contact."

"No." A pause while they moved their attention to the color change's outer edge, where the blue faded back into gray-green at a gradient I could trace with my peripheral vision. "This is not the normal range for anything I have baseline data for."

I kept turning the device in my hands, slow rotation, maintaining contact. The warmth had increased slightly but not dramatically, maybe one or two degrees above where it had started, the temperature of a piece of electronics that's been running for an hour. The surface texture was still granular but there was a quality to the pressure response that I hadn't had the vocabulary for when I picked it up: it didn't deform, but it met my grip slightly differently than a static object would, a faint reciprocity that was not mechanical and not quite biological and that my hands had no existing category for.

I filed this information and continued the rotation.

"You said the calibration session would start on contact," I said. "What does the beginning feel like. What should I expect."

Sonn crossed to the equipment rack on the left wall and pulled a monitoring unit from it, a small rectangular device with a display surface that they brought back to the table's edge and set up facing them. The display produced a readout I couldn't interpret from my angle. Sonn looked at it for two seconds before looking back at me.

"The Thuvari description is that the beginning of calibration feels like attention." They chose this word carefully; I could see them selecting it. "Not external attention. Internal. The sensation of your own awareness sharpening on things it normally passes over. Some cases describe heightened clarity of sensation in the hands. Some describe spatial awareness of the room increasing, a new precision in the periphery."

"And some cases describe something different."

Sonn's hands, which had settled at the monitoring unit's edge, moved again. "Some cases describe discomfort. Specifically, a pressure sensation behind the eyes and a brief period of difficulty with ambient input, sounds or light or both becoming momentarily more intrusive before the system settles."

"Is that a warning sign."

"It is a phase. It resolves in seconds to minutes for Thuvari cases with high compatibility scores. For a compatibility profile like yours," Sonn said, "I do not have a direct comparison to offer."

This was honest. I'd learned to receive it as such.

The device in my hands continued its slow color response to my contact points. My spatial awareness of the room was exactly what it always was: the monitoring unit on the table, Sonn to my left and forward, the door at my back-left, the equipment rack on the wall, the overhead light panel with its third bulb running slightly brighter than the other two, the forty-nine second recycled air interval that was eight seconds from its next cycle. All of that was exactly where it had been when I walked in.

I held the device and waited to feel something and didn't feel anything except the warmth of it and the reciprocal quality in the surface and the mild interest of handling a new thing.

Then the overhead light panel's brighter bulb seemed to shift. Not physically. The brightness didn't change by any measurable degree. But my awareness of the differential between it and the other two panels jumped, became more specific, the way your eyes adjust to a room after a minute in the dark and you can suddenly see things you couldn't when you first walked in.

I tracked the edge of the light panel's casing. There was a small warping in the top-right corner of the casing where it had been mounted slightly off-plumb, not visible unless you were looking for it. I had not been looking for it. I was looking at it now.

"Something is happening," I said.

Sonn's eyes went immediately to the monitoring unit display. "Describe it."

"Ambient detail. The light panel. The room." I kept the rotation of the device going, slow and even. "Everything is exactly where it was. But I'm reading it differently. Higher resolution, maybe. Like a focus adjustment."

Sonn looked at the display for three seconds, then looked at me. "Your integration signal is present," they said. "The device has begun the initial reading phase."

This was the moment, then. The start of it.

My hands had not changed. The device was warm and granular and reciprocal in my palms and the blue had spread across most of its visible surface now, the gray-green pushed to the far edges, and the color was not dramatic, it was simply different and thorough. Sonn was watching the monitoring display with the focus of someone reading something that required full attention.

The heightened ambient detail persisted. The warped light panel casing stayed visible. The door behind me had a hairline gap at the left hinge that I hadn't clocked on the way in. Sonn's posture had shifted two degrees forward from their baseline, weight slightly more toward the monitoring unit, which was the physical expression of attention they used when data was coming in faster than expected.

I noticed Sonn's hands.

They had re-clasped at the table's edge, and the knuckles were more prominent than usual, the grip slightly tighter than their baseline resting state. Sonn's hands, across four conversations, were consistently relaxed, used for deliberate emphasis, returned to rest between gestures. These hands were holding on to the table edge. Not pressing hard. Just holding.

Sonn was watching something on that monitoring display that they hadn't fully told me to expect.

"Sonn," I said.

They didn't look up immediately. A second, then two, then they pulled their attention from the display and met my eyes.

"The reading rate is faster than the Thuvari baseline," they said. The careful quality was very much present. "Significantly faster. The system is not waiting for extended contact to map your pattern. It is mapping it as we speak, at a rate I have not seen in the case records."

"Is that a problem."

"It is a variable." Sonn released the table edge. Their hands went to their sides. "It means the calibration session may be shorter than I projected or it may be more intensive. I do not know which yet." A pause. "I want you to know that I am watching the readings continuously and if anything approaches the threshold values I have established as concerning, I will tell you immediately."

"Tell me what the threshold values are based on."

"The Thuvari cascade failure cases." Sonn said this without deflection, which I'd asked for in our first conversation and they had consistently delivered since. "The reading rate in both documented cases accelerated significantly in the minutes before the cascade began. I am watching for acceleration in the rate of change, not the rate itself."

The rate itself was already faster than their baseline. What they were watching for was a change in that rate. That was a meaningful distinction and I was glad they'd made it explicitly rather than leaving me to infer it.

The device was warmer now. Not uncomfortable. The four-to-six degree ambient increase had become eight or nine, the temperature of something left in mild sunlight, and the surface reciprocity I'd noticed on first contact had increased to the point where my hands registered a very slight movement in the material, not visible, purely tactile, the way you can feel a pulse through a held wrist without seeing any external movement.

My spatial awareness of the room had not continued to increase beyond that first jump, but it had not returned to baseline either. It had settled at a new level, sharper than normal, every detail in my peripheral vision carrying slightly more information than it usually did. The recycled air cycle had run twice since I'd picked up the device. I had tracked both without intending to.

"The first stage will not feel like gaining anything," Sonn had told me, on the scout ship, in the first real explanation they'd given. "It will feel like losing something."

I held the device and paid attention to my hands and my spatial awareness and the way the room was presenting itself to me, and I waited to feel a loss.

"One more question," I said.

Sonn, who had returned their attention to the monitoring display, looked up.

"You said the system reads intent through neurological pattern." I kept the device turning in my hands, the same slow rotation. "Not muscle or bone. So what it's mapping right now is how I think."

"How you process," Sonn said. "Under normal conditions, under attention, under evaluation. Yes."

"And it builds on that."

"It amplifies the circuits that are already strongest. What you use most effectively is what develops most readily." They watched the display. "What you do not have, it cannot build from nothing."

I thought about what I used most effectively. Twenty-two years of reading terrain and weather and deer trails and which fence posts needed pulling before spring. The spatial awareness that Durrik had flagged in the assessment and called worth keeping. The trigger discipline that came from never taking a shot I wasn't sure of, because game was finite and ammunition cost something and wrong shots made noise that emptied the woods for two days. The patience, which wasn't a virtue so much as a method: you got to where you needed to be and you waited for the moment to arrive rather than going after it before it was ready.

All of that was what the device was reading right now. All of that was what it would work with.

The loss Sonn had mentioned was not a sensation of something leaving. It was subtler than that, and I almost missed it: the sense that the baseline I'd operated on for twenty-two years was being measured, categorized, and filed, and that whatever came next would be built on top of it in ways I wouldn't be able to separate from the original. The person who had walked into this research bay would walk out of it having been read, and whatever the device found in that reading was going to inform everything it did to me from this point forward.

That was the loss. Not of a capability. Of the clean slate.

I hadn't had a clean slate since the transport beam, but this was different. This was the last time the system wouldn't know me.

The device in my hands pulsed once. Not a mechanical pulse. The warmth increased sharply for two seconds and then settled back, and the reciprocal quality in the surface went from faint to definite to faint again, a single clean cycle, and the blue across the surface went saturated for that same two seconds, deep enough to be clearly visible from across the room.

Sonn made the sound again, the one that wasn't quite speech.

I looked at them. They were looking at the monitoring display with both hands flat on the table beside it, not gripping, just resting, and their posture had gone still in the way of someone who has just seen a reading resolve into a number they needed a second to process.

"What was that," I said.

"Initial mapping complete," Sonn said. "The first stage of reading." They looked up from the display. Their expression was the calibration-between-expectation-and-reality one. "What you felt was the system completing its baseline profile. In Thuvari cases, this phase took between forty minutes and two hours." A pause. "You have been holding the device for eleven minutes."

Eleven minutes. The two recycled-air cycles had been forty-nine seconds each. I'd tracked them both. My math was right.

"What happens next," I said.

"Now the calibration begins." Sonn straightened from the table. "That is the process I described as intensive. The system will run your stress-response patterns against the baseline it has just completed. It will take several hours. It will be uncomfortable." They moved toward the chair at the room's far end, the one positioned facing the space where I stood, and pulled it to a more direct angle. "I will stay. You should sit."

I looked at the device in my hands. The blue had returned to its earlier distribution, a deep even coverage across the contact points, the edges fading back to gray-green. It was warm and it was reading me and the eleven minutes I'd spent turning it over and looking at the light panel casing and tracking the recycled air had given it everything it needed to know about how I processed the world when I wasn't under pressure.

The calibration would test what I did when I was.

"Chair's over there," Sonn said.

I pulled it to the table's edge and sat with the device in my lap, both palms against its surface, the warmth steady under my hands. Sonn settled into their chair across from me with the monitoring unit repositioned between us, display facing them.

Outside the research bay the station went about its functions. Somewhere down the corridor, the training deck hummed with its own machinery. The air cycle counted its intervals. The war continued in whatever sectors it was currently being fought, and Eshet, or whoever held the Dominion's equivalent of her role, was making whatever decisions the Dominion was currently making about the compatible human in Compact custody, and Durrik was probably doing something efficient with his time before zero eight hundred tomorrow.

All of that was real and present and it would still be there when the calibration finished.

I held the device and the device held its warmth against my palms and the monitoring unit tracked whatever it was tracking, and I sat with the last moment of being unread, and then the calibration began, and the research bay was exactly where it had been.
