"She'll run another one from a different vector."
He looked at the passive coverage map for a moment. "The north wall."
"That was my read too." The north wall was the approach I'd identified the previous night as the most likely avenue for gifted soldiers who could cross open ground quickly. If she ran a probe there, she was testing whether the detection range held across the open approach terrain or whether the extension had directional variance.
Did it have directional variance? I didn't know. I had not thought to test that and had no data on it. I filed the question as something I needed to answer before it became a problem.
"Second probe will tell you things too," Durrik said. It was not reassurance. It was tactical arithmetic: information flowed both directions in a probe exchange, and Eshet wasn't the only one collecting it.

"That's the problem."
"Options."
"Pull the extension back to passive-only between probes. It was the conservative choice. That was the right question. "I don't know. The gifted signatures are denser than standard. I've been tracking them at full gain. Reduced gain might blur the read on the gifted elements specifically."
Durrik picked up the optical scope again. He looked through the east secondary's approach gap, not because there was anything to see in the next thirty seconds, but because he thought better with his attention directed at a physical reference point. I had started noticing this pattern in him three weeks ago.
"Passive between probes," he said. "Full engagement on confirmed contact only. You preserve the start state for the main assault. The sensor equipment handles the probe's initial registration. You call it when they're inside your confirmed modeling range."
"I lose the outer detection margin."
"You lose two hundred meters of early warning. You keep the predictive extension functional for the main assault." He lowered the scope. "One is a tactical inconvenience. The other is a tactical loss."
He was right. I hadn't framed it that way because I was used to treating the full-range detection as the baseline. He was right that it wasn't the thing I needed to protect.
"Passive between contacts," I said.
He nodded. "Tell Greel. He needs to know the sensor equipment is the primary contact registration between probes."
I went to Greel and told him. "The extension," he said. "You running it now?"
"Passive mode. Background tracking."
He nodded. He had been present for enough of the tactical conversations to understand the distinction between passive and active, and he didn't ask anything further. I watched him go. He had not frozen at the entry point during the seizure phase. She was watching her own probes from somewhere with communications access to all four approach vectors. She had a command position with situational awareness that covered the whole node's perimeter.
I reported this to Greel. He was quiet for a moment.
"That means she's positioned close enough for reliable tactical comms with all four approach vectors simultaneously," he said.
"One hundred and fifty meters to one-eighty, probably northeast quadrant. That's the geometric center of all four approach vectors." I looked at the passive coverage map. "Can you read her."

Greel processed this. "When the main assault comes in, she'll be close."
"Yes. That's both a problem and an opportunity."
He looked at me with the expression he'd been using since the first day in the forward position: not skepticism anymore, but the evaluating attention of a commander assessing whether the specialized asset's read was reliable enough to act on. "Tell me when you have her position," he said.

I'll know when I'm approaching the ceiling before I hit it. Whether there's enough warning time to do anything about it is the variable."
Durrik looked at me with the direct, flat assessment I had stopped trying to read as anything other than what it was: a competent person taking accurate measure of a situation they needed to understand.
"Report it when you feel it," he said. "Not after."
"Yes."
He went back to his observation post.

The node's ambient sounds were the same: recycled atmosphere through the ventilation conduits, the low mechanical hum of the supply systems, the occasional structural creak of prefab panels adjusting to temperature differential. All the same sounds. Denavi appeared at the hub's east entry, crossing the interior corridor with the quiet efficiency she'd had in the unit since the first night on the perimeter walk. She checked the handheld reader's display without asking, read the formation distance, and looked at me.
"One hundred and forty-two."
"Yes."
"She's been walking it in."
"The whole time."
Denavi settled into a position against the east interior wall, weight distributed for the long wait, her own tactical reader on her knee showing the choke point's coverage geometry. She looked at the display for a moment.

The unit was in position. The choke points were covered. Rovan was at his elevation. Fireteam Galven held the southeast static coverage. Greel was at the central coordination position. Durrik was at his observation post.
Hetch was on the north interior line.
My right ear ran its elevated pitch against the node's hum.
