1. Create a free account. No credit card or subscription required. Just a username, email, and password.
2. Complete onboarding. Set your display name (pen name) and pick how you want to start — new book, import, or translate.
3. Start with Free AI. New accounts can use included Kestrel — Free — included AI, no setup. Pace is typically outline + 3 new chapters/day (edits don’t use the slot) on the shared Free queue. Pro / Ultra add Kestrel — Pro / Ultra (better prose + monthly pool; Ultra is larger).
4. Create a book. Click New Book, pick a genre preset, set your target word count and chapter count, then describe your story.
5. Generate content. Use the outline tool to plan your story, then generate chapters one at a time or all at once. Filling in Story Wizard does not use AI words; generating or regenerating an outline does, as do chapter drafts.
6. Edit and refine. Every chapter is fully editable. Revise AI output to match your voice. Use diffs when you ask AI to rewrite a passage so you can accept or reject each change.
7. Ship and export. Open the Ship tab to fill listing details, send a beta-reader link, and download TXT, Markdown, DOCX, EPUB, or PDF for Kindle Direct Publishing or another storefront. Entangled Text is not a reading platform — new books cannot be published on this site.

Free includes Kestrel — Free AI (included AI — no setup; outline + 3 new chapters/day). Pro / Ultra add Kestrel — Pro / Ultra (much more powerful AI with better prose; Ultra is a larger monthly pool). Personal provider keys are not a customer plan feature. See pricing.

Generation uses platform-managed routing for your plan. You do not need to connect OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or other providers to write.

After onboarding, each book opens in Story Studio. The layout is two workspaces so drafting and listing work do not fight for the same screen:

• Write — Outline, chapter list, editor, generation, polish diffs, continuity (story bible / Ask My Book), and chapter locks. This is where the manuscript lives.
• Ship — Title, blurb, categories/keywords, cover helpers, readiness checks, beta-reader share links, launch checklist, and export. This is where you prepare a file for a storefront you control.

You can jump between Write and Ship at any time. Export does not require a “publish on Entangled Text” step. Filling Story Wizard fields does not spend AI words; generating or regenerating an outline does, as do new chapter drafts.

When starting a new book, you choose one of three modes:

• Quick Start — Pick a genre, write a short prompt describing your story, and go. The AI fills in sensible defaults for tone, pacing, perspective, and structure based on your genre. Best for getting started fast.
• Customized — Full control over every aspect of your book: perspective (first/third person), tense, tone, pacing, dialogue density, violence/romance/humor levels, world-building depth, magic systems, target audience, and much more. Best for experienced authors who want precise control.
• Existing Book — Paste your existing chapters and the AI analyzes your writing style, characters, and voice to continue the story consistently. It extracts a "voice fingerprint" and character roster to maintain consistency. Best for authors with a work-in-progress.

Genre presets configure the AI's writing style, tone, pacing, and structure to match genre conventions. Each preset includes a curated writing guide that helps the AI produce genre-appropriate prose.

Available genres include:

• Fantasy — Epic, Dark, Urban, Progression, LitRPG, Cultivation, Sword & Sorcery, Romantic, Paranormal, High Fantasy
• Sci-fi — Space Opera, Hard Sci-fi, Cyberpunk, Military Sci-fi, Time Travel, Post-Apocalyptic Sci-fi, Dystopian Sci-fi
• Romance — Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, and more
• Mystery & Thriller — Cozy Mystery, Police Procedural, Psychological Thriller, Legal Thriller, Espionage
• Horror — Gothic, Cosmic, Slasher, Psychological Horror
• Literary Fiction, Historical Fiction, Young Adult, Adventure & Action, Western, Humor & Comedy, Dystopian, Women's Fiction, LGBTQ+ Fiction, Crime, Military & War, Superhero, and more

Each genre has sub-genres with their own tuned settings. You can further customize any preset's settings after selecting it.

In Customized mode (and as overrides in Quick Start), you can configure:

• Title & description — Your book's title and a short synopsis
• Story prompt — A detailed description of your plot, characters, and world
• Target word count — 1,000 to 500,000 words
• Target chapters — 1 to 100 chapters
• Words per chapter — Min and max word count per chapter
• Kestrel tier — Which included model this project uses, based on your plan
• Perspective — First person, third person limited, third person omniscient
• Tense — Past or present tense
• Tone & pacing — From lighthearted to dark, slow-burn to fast-paced
• Content levels — Dialogue density, description density, action, violence, romance, humor, darkness (each on a scale)
• World building — Depth of world-building, magic system details, technology level
• Character bible — Detailed character descriptions the AI references for consistency
• Plot beats — Key story events the AI should hit
• Themes — Thematic elements to weave throughout
• Negative prompts — Things to explicitly avoid
• Name blacklist — Character names the AI should never introduce
• Progression/LitRPG options — Stats, levels, skill systems for genre-specific books

Before generating chapters, you create an outline that maps out your entire book. The AI uses your story prompt, genre settings, and all configured options to produce a structured chapter-by-chapter plan. Filling in Story Wizard (genre, cast, length, notes) does not spend AI capacity. Generating or regenerating the outline does — on Free it uses Free AI capacity (outline is allowed without burning your new-chapter/day slot); on Pro / Ultra it draws from the monthly pool. Free new chapter drafts are paced at outline + 3 new chapters/day (edits don’t use the slot). Long outlines (40+ chapters) can use a large share of a Pro / Ultra month before any chapter is drafted — Ultra’s larger pool helps if you regenerate often.

For Existing Book mode, the outline is generated from your manuscript — analyzing what you've already written and planning where the story should go next.

You can edit the outline before proceeding. The outline serves as the roadmap for all subsequent chapter generation.

Once your outline is ready, you can generate chapters in several ways:

• Sample chapter — Generate just the first chapter to preview the AI's style before committing to the full book.
• One at a time — Generate the next chapter, review it, edit if needed, then continue.
• Full book — Generate all remaining chapters sequentially. The AI writes each chapter in order, using previous chapters as context for consistency.

The AI builds rich context for each chapter including: the system prompt with all your settings, the outline, a summary of previous chapters, and the most recent chapter content. This ensures characters stay consistent, plot threads are maintained, and the writing style remains uniform.

Every generated chapter is fully editable. From the Chapters tab in the book editor, you can:

• Edit content — Full text editor for every chapter. Change anything the AI wrote.
• Edit titles — Rename chapters to your liking.
• Delete chapters — Remove chapters you don't want.
• Finalize chapters — Mark a chapter as finalized when you're happy with it so it is harder to overwrite by accident.
• Lock passages — Keep approved text in place when you regenerate or polish nearby material.

All books → Chapters gives you a bird's-eye view of all chapters across all your books, grouped by project with word counts and reading times.

Export your finished book from the Export tab — EPUB, DOCX, PDF, plain text, Markdown, or a narration/ACX script — plus a one-click KDP bundle (.zip) containing the EPUB, DOCX, Markdown, cover, blurb, metadata, and an EPUBCheck report:

• TXT — Plain text. Universal compatibility.
• Markdown — Formatted text with headings and structure. Great for further editing in tools like Obsidian or Notion.
• DOCX — Microsoft Word format. Ready for traditional publishing workflows or further formatting.
• EPUB — Industry-standard ebook format. Ready for Kindle (via KDP), Apple Books, Kobo, and all major ebook platforms.
• PDF — Formatted document. Good for print-on-demand or sharing.

EPUB and DOCX exports can include metadata you configure in Book Details: author name, copyright, publisher, dedication, and "about the author" blurb. You can set defaults for these fields in your account settings.

Entangled Text is a writing studio — not a reading platform. When your manuscript is ready, use the Ship tab in Story Studio to:

• Fill listing details — Cover, blurb, tags, and KDP metadata for exports.
• Export — Download EPUB, DOCX, PDF, or Markdown for Kindle Direct Publishing, Apple Books, Kobo, and other storefronts.
• Launch checklist — Beta reader links, distribution platforms, and marketing prep.

In-platform story publishing on Entangled Text is no longer available. Previously published URLs may still work for existing readers, but new books cannot be published here.

Entangled Text is not a public reading platform. You do not publish chapters here for strangers to follow. When you want feedback, use Ship → Beta readers to create a share link.

• Read-only link — Send a token URL. Recipients do not need an Entangled Text account. Invalid or expired tokens show a simple error page (those URLs are noindex).
• Scope — Share the whole book or a single chapter.
• Comments and suggested edits — Optional. Readers can leave notes or proposed wording; you accept, reject, or resolve them in Write.
• Expiry and labels — Name the link (for example “Round 1 — Sarah”) and set an expiry so old drafts do not stay live.

Ask betas where they skimmed, which character felt flat, and whether any passage felt robotic. Do not send a first draft full of plot holes you already know about — that burns trust. After you process notes, run the manuscript cleanup report before you format for KDP.

Older public story, chapter, and author URLs from when in-platform publishing existed may still resolve for existing readers. New books cannot be published on the site. Comments, favorites, and follow-for-new-chapters applied to that old reading community, not to Story Studio projects.

From Dashboard → Account, you can manage:

• Profile — Display name and avatar (JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP, up to 20 MB with cropping).
• Email — Change your email address (requires current password).
• Password — Change your password (min 10 characters, must include upper, lower, number, and special character).
• Social links — Add links to your social media profiles. These can appear on exports and on any remaining public author page from previously published stories.
• Daily word goal — Set a target and track your streak on the dashboard.
• Export presets — Save preferred export format combinations.
• Kindle/KDP defaults — Pre-fill author name, copyright, publisher, dedication, and "about the author" for exports.
• Referral link — Share your unique link to invite other authors.
• Delete account — Permanently remove your account and all data (requires password confirmation).

Your dashboard also tracks milestones like your first book, reaching 10,000 and 50,000 words, and your first export.

Your data and account are protected by multiple layers of security:

• Password hashing — Passwords are hashed with bcrypt (cost factor 12). We never store or see your actual password.
• CSRF protection — All forms and API calls include cross-site request forgery tokens.
• Rate limiting — Login attempts, password resets, registration, content generation, and exports are all rate-limited to prevent abuse.
• Brute-force detection — Repeated failed login attempts trigger account lockouts.
• Included AI — Free / Pro / Ultra generation uses platform-managed Kestrel pools. You do not need to bring a personal provider key.
