The Wrong Man

Derek Caulfield didn't volunteer for anything. He was three hours into a pre-dawn deer hunt on his own forty acres in Cocke County, Tennessee, when a transport beam lifted him off the ridge mid-step and deposited him inside an alien spacecraft. His first response was to put two crew members on the floor with his grandfather's rifle. His second was to ask where the exit was. Neither worked.

The Solvari Compact is losing a hundred-year war against the Verath Dominion—a war fought on the ground, up close, against enemy soldiers enhanced by the Aeluun, a vanished civilization whose technology reshapes biology at the genetic level. The only species ever found compatible enough to use Aeluun progression devices refuses to fight. That leaves Derek, whose compatibility score is higher than anything the Compact has ever recorded, and whose primary qualification is that he is practical, suspicious of anyone giving him orders, and almost entirely without interest in being anyone's solution to anything.

What follows is not a story about a chosen hero learning his destiny. There are no menus, no tutorials, no ancient prophecy waiting to be fulfilled. There is a man who figures things out by doing them, abilities that develop through real combat at genuine cost, and a war that will not wait for him to decide how he feels about any of it. The Compact needs him. The Dominion knows he exists. And the Tennessee ridge he left behind is no longer the kind of simple he can get back to.

The Wrong Man is hard military science fiction for readers who want a protagonist who thinks before he acts, earns every advantage the hard way, and never quite stops looking for the exit.
