How to Use AI to Find Where Your Scenes Overstay Their Welcome

The Scene You Can't See Clearly Because You Wrote It

You know the feeling. You finish a scene, read it back, and it feels fine. Every sentence seems necessary. Then three weeks later, in a different mood, you skim the same scene and think: why is this still going? The confrontation ended two pages ago. The characters are just... talking now. This isn't a skill problem. It's a proximity problem. Ignore secondary details, mood, and worldbuilding. State only the core function — e.g., "Establishes that X distrusts Y" or "Reveals the location of the artifact." Why this works: forcing a one-sentence answer strips away the AI's tendency to summarize plot beats politely and instead makes it commit to a single causal function. The follow-up — locating where that job gets accomplished — is the part most writers skip. You want the *moment*, not the scene average. The dramatic job of this scene is: "Mara realizes her brother has been feeding information to the guild." Find the exact point in the text where this realization is complete and confirmed for the reader — not hinted at, fully landed. Quote that sentence. Then list everything that comes after it, paragraph by paragraph, and for each paragraph tell me: (1) does it introduce new information the plot needs, or (2) is it emotional processing / re-explaining / lingering that could be cut or compressed. Be blunt — don't protect my prose.
That last line matters more than it looks. AI models are trained to be agreeable, and left unprompted, they'll find a generous reading for almost any paragraph — "this adds emotional texture," "this deepens the reader's understanding." Telling it explicitly not to protect your prose changes the tone of the response. You'll start getting answers like "paragraph 9 restates the betrayal Mara already processed in paragraph 7" — which is the exact kind of thing you can't see yourself because you remember writing paragraph 7 and paragraph 9 as two different beats, even when a reader would experience them as the same beat twice. Give me the sequence of numbers by paragraph. Then tell me the paragraph number where tension peaks and the paragraph number where it starts declining and never recovers.
Now put the two outputs side by side. If the "purpose complete" paragraph and the "tension starts declining" paragraph are close together, trust the cutoff — that's a real overstay. But if tension is still climbing after the stated purpose completes, you likely have a scene doing two jobs: the plot job you extracted, and an emotional job the first prompt didn't ask about. Rerun step one and specifically ask, "what is the emotional or character-level job of this scene, separate from the plot information it delivers?" You'll often get a second sentence you missed, and a second, later cutoff point.
The AI is good at finding where information stops. You're still the one who has to judge where feeling stops.
This is also the point where genre matters. The Three-Pass Workflow: Extract, Locate, Rewrite the Exit

Put together, this becomes a repeatable revision pass rather than a one-off trick. Here's the sequence that works chapter by chapter:
