Chapter-zero brief: This is Chapter 14. POV is Mireille, third-person limited. She arrives at her sister's apartment expecting comfort and instead finds it emptied out — furniture gone, no note. She must realize her sister has fled before she can process why. Scene enters with Mireille climbing the stairs, exits with her sitting on the bare floor holding the one item her sister left behind (a cracked phone charger). Must not reveal WHY the sister left — that's Chapter 19. Tone matches established voice: dry, controlled, occasional dark humor undercutting grief.
Variant A (pacing-first): Generate this chapter prioritizing forward momentum. Keep description spare. Get her into the apartment fast, let the emptiness hit in quick, escalating beats. Target 1400 words.
Variant B (dialogue-first): Generate this chapter built mostly around a phone call Mireille makes to a building super or neighbor trying to get information, with her internal reactions kept minimal and folded into dialogue tags and short beats. Target 1400 words.
Variant C (interiority-first): Generate this chapter slowing down inside Mireille's perception — what she notices, what she convinces herself of before the truth catches up, sensory detail of the empty rooms. Target 1400 words.
Notice the brief stays identical across all three prompts, word-for-word, and only the generation instruction changes. That consistency is what makes the drafts comparable instead of just three different chapters. Build the Rubric Before You Read a Single Word
This step gets skipped constantly and it's the reason batching fails for a lot of writers who try it once and give up. If you read all three drafts and then ask yourself "which one do I like best," you'll pick the one that's most fun to read in isolation — usually the dialogue-first version, because dialogue reads fast and feels alive. Do not tell me to just pick one draft overall — I want a beat-by-beat breakdown. Also flag any single sentence or line of dialogue from ANY draft, even a weak one overall, that's stronger than what appears in the "winning" draft for that beat. Then assemble a merged version of the chapter using the strongest unit for each beat, preserving Mireille's voice as established in Draft C, and note in brackets anywhere you had to write connective tissue that wasn't in any original draft.
Two things make this prompt work. First, breaking the chapter into named beats forces the comparison down to a granular level — you stop comparing "Draft A vs Draft B" as monoliths and start comparing how each one handled the discovery-of-empty-rooms beat specifically. Second, explicitly asking it to flag stray strong lines from weaker drafts is how you catch the stuff your rubric's "what surprised you" category was designed to protect. Sometimes the pacing-first draft is otherwise too thin to use, but it has one gutting line of dialogue in the phone call scene that belongs in your final chapter no matter which draft anchors it. Avoiding Frankenstein Prose: The Consistency Pass
A merged chapter, fresh out of the merge prompt, usually reads a little seasick. Beat one has a different rhythm than beat three because they came from different generation lanes with different instructions. Transitions are stitched, not grown. This is the predictable cost of the technique, and skipping this step is the single biggest reason writers try batching once and decide it's not worth the extra effort. Do NOT alter plot content, dialogue meaning, or the order of beats — only adjust prose rhythm, transitional sentences, and word choice for voice match. That last instruction — show me every sentence you changed — is not optional. Without it, a consistency pass can quietly rewrite content you deliberately chose during the merge because it "flowed better," which defeats the entire point of the exercise.
