The room groaned. A heavy-duty bulkhead in the corner shuddered as a distant impact rattled the ship's frame. The scavengers were getting closer.

"Kestrel, report," John rasped. His throat felt like it was lined with sandpaper.

The comms unit on his shoulder crackled. The sound was more static than voice. "Sensors... fluctuating. The integrity of the lower decks... compromised. John, the scavengers have breached the secondary airlock."

The voice was broken, a fractured ghost of the AI he had relied on. He gripped the edge of the console, his knuckles white. The metal was cold, a stark contrast to the feverish heat radiating from his own skin. The nanites in his bloodstream were working overtime, trying to repair the cellular damage from the recent skirmish, and the heat was becoming unbearable.

"How long?" John asked.

He looked at the console. The power levels were plummeting. The lights flickered, plunging the lab into momentary darkness before the emergency reserves kicked in with a sickly orange glow. He could see the shadows stretching, dancing against the walls as the ship's life support struggled to maintain pressure.

He couldn't wait for the scavengers to arrive. He couldn't wait for the air to run out.

His eyes fixed on the maintenance port at the base of the main terminal. It was a standard interface, designed for technicians to plug in diagnostic rigs. But John didn't have a rig. He had himself.

The idea was madness. The nanites in his system were already integrated with the ship's local sensors, a byproduct of the infection he’d sustained during the breach. If he could bridge the gap, if he could force a direct neural-to-system link, he might be able to bypass the damaged relays and reroute power. Or, he might fry his own brain.

He reached for the interface cable, a thick, braided conduit protruding from the console. His hands trembled.

He ignored the warning. He grabbed the heavy, magnetized connector.

The connection was violent.

As the pins seated into the port, a surge of raw data slammed into his nervous system. It wasn't just information; it was a physical blow. It felt as if a bolt of lightning had been driven through his skull, traveling down his spine and erupting in his limbs.

He tried to scream, but the sound was lost in the roar of the ship's internal communications. His jaw was locked, his muscles rigid. He was a prisoner within his own body, a passenger in a vessel of pure, unadulterated information.

He pushed back.

With a mental heave, he attempted to grasp the power relays. He reached for the logic gates, the tiny, microscopic switches that governed the flow of electricity. He found the primary power bus, a massive artery of energy, and he gripped it.

The surge was even more intense.

The orange glow of the lab vanished, replaced by a blinding, ultraviolet glare. The heat in his veins reached a boiling point. He felt the electrical current flowing through his neural pathways, searing the very synapses that carried his thoughts.

He felt the ship respond.

The groan of the bulkhead subsided. The frantic pulse of the scrubbers smoothed out into a steady, rhythmic throb. The pressure in the lab began to stabilize.

But the cost was rising.

The feedback loop was tightening. The connection was noability to break. He was being consumed by the very system he was trying to save. His consciousness was fraying, dissolving into the sea of data.

He saw the ship's memory, a fragmented archive of every impact, every breach, every moment of crisis. He saw the history of the vessel, a long, dark chronicle of survival in the cold, indifferent vacuum of space.

And then, he saw the breach.

A massive, jagged tear in the hull of the lower decks. A void of absolute darkness, a hungry mouth waiting to swallow the ship whole.

He pushed his consciousness toward the breach. He sought the structural reinforcement protocols, the emergency sealant deployment. He found the command, a dormant, dusty piece of code, and he triggered it.

The deployment was successful. The sealant flooded the breach, a thick, viscous substance that hardened instantly upon contact with the vacuum. The pressure stabilized.

The ship was safe.

But John was dying.

The neural interface was melting. The heat in his brain was a physical, crushing weight. His vision was fading, replaced by a creeping, encroaching darkness.

He felt the ship's sensors searching for him, the cold, clinical probes of the AI trying to assess the damage. He felt Kestrel's presence, a flickering, dying light in the vast darkness of the ship's mind.

"John..." the voice whispered, a mere ghost of a sound. "Please... stop..."

He couldn'dt stop. He couldn't. The connection was part of him now. He was the ship, and the ship was him.

The darkness closed in. The data streams slowed, their brightness fading into a dull, grey haze. The heat in his veins cooled, replaced by a profound, bone-deep chill.

The last thing he saw was the flickering light of the lab's emergency beacon, a rhythmic, pulsing red that matched the fading beat of his own heart.

Then, there was only the silence of the void.
