Seizing the Ship's Heart

The weight of Jax's cooling body pressed against the memory of John's boots. He did not linger. To stay was to become another grey, lifeless silhouette against the bulkhead, and he had already watched enough men harden into furniture. He forced his legs to move, pushing away from the slumped shape of his former contact. The thermal map of the corridor offered no comfort: only a jagged landscape of dying heat and the encroaching blue chill of the ship's failing systems.
"Kestrel. Give me a path." John's voice was a rasping friction in the dark.
"The primary access shaft to the engineering deck is blocked by structural debris," Kestrel's voice crackled through his earpiece, the tone stripped of its usual stability. "Debris from the mid-deck breach. I am rerouting you through the secondary maintenance conduit. It is narrow. It is unstable."
John did not respond. The effort of moving through the cramped, venting corridor was draining the last of his reserves, and words cost oxygen he didn't have. The maintenance conduit was a tight, metallic throat, slick with hydraulic fluid and the condensation of a dying ship. He crawled, hands scraping against jagged interior edges, shoulders burning with every forward push. The cold was invasive, seeping through his suit from the hull breaches above, while the exertion kept a thin sweat pressed against his skin.
The conduit groaned around him. Above, the heavy plating of the ship's superstructure creaked under shifting gravity. He could feel the slow, nauseating rotation suggesting the stabilizers were failing, the whole vessel listing in fractions too small to see but large enough to feel in his inner ear.
"The conduit is venting atmospheric gases," Kestrel warned. "Oxygen levels in your immediate vicinity are dropping. You have approximately twelve minutes before hypoxia becomes a critical risk."
He pushed harder. A ruptured steam pipe forced him to press flat against the conduit floor, the scalding mist burning along the back of his neck. His vision narrowed to the glowing heat-mapped outlines his nanites were painting across the inside of his perception: orange pipes, blue cold patches, and the grey nothing of metal that offered no information at all. He navigated by those ghost-colors, moving on instinct through a tunnel he could not see with his actual eyes.
At a junction where the conduit widened by perhaps forty centimeters, the maintenance bay below came into partial view through a grated access panel. John stopped. He pressed himself flat and looked down.
The bay was chaos given a kind of terrible order. A cargo drone lay in the wreckage below, its chassis wrenched open and sparking at irregular intervals. A failing light fixture strobed above it, throwing long rhythmic shadows across the grating that made the whole space feel like it was breathing. Emergency lighting in deep amber cast everything in the color of old rust.
Then he saw the figures.
Five of them, maybe six. Dark, utilitarian gear without insignia, the kind of anonymous kit that said faction rather than military. They were not scavenging. Their movements were too coordinated, too deliberate. They were hauling heavy power cells, the bright blue glow of the energy cores painting their faces in cold light as they worked. Near the far bulkhead, a large metallic dish was already partially assembled, its mounting brackets bolted to the deck with the confidence of people who planned to be there for a while.
"Kestrel," John whispered, mouth close to the grating. "They're setting up a signal relay."
"Confirmed. Signal strength is increasing as the array takes shape. They are broadcasting on a wide-band frequency." A pause, shorter than a breath. "This is not a distress call. It is a beacon."
The distinction landed with more weight than the word itself carried. A distress call asked for help. A beacon told something where to come. The ship was not being saved; it was being flagged.
He watched as the tallest figure, a broad-shouldered person with a heavy pulse rifle slung across their back, connected a thick cable from a power cell to the dish's central hub. The dish was angled toward the external communications array. One more connection and they would have enough power to push a signal through the hull.
John's lungs were already pulling hard for air. The oxygen in the conduit was thinning faster than Kestrel's twelve-minute estimate suggested. He needed to reach the engineering deck. He needed to kill that signal before whatever the beacon was calling arrived.
The descent to the bay floor was a vertical ladder bolted into the conduit wall, its rungs slick with oil and what he chose not to look at too closely. Each step required a conscious commitment, the metal groaning under his weight in a way that seemed designed to advertise his presence. He controlled his speed, kept his movements tight, and reached the floor with both feet landing softly on the grating.
He stayed low, pressing into the shadow behind a housing unit the size of a groundcar. The air here was thick with ozone and burnt circuitry, the kind of smell that meant systems were failing faster than they could compensate. He oriented himself by the dish's blue glow and moved.
The shadows in the maintenance bay were generous. Heavy machinery provided cover, the disorganized debris of a ship under structural stress creating natural concealment. He worked through it carefully, tracking the rebels by sound when he lost visual, the rhythmic clank of their tools and the low murmur of their voices steady enough to navigate by.
At the edge of the bay, the engineering deck's primary blast door stood partially ajar. A thin bar of white light fell through the gap onto the grating at John's feet. He pressed himself against the bulkhead beside it and looked through.
The engineering deck was alive with the kind of frantic, purposeful energy that tends to follow a decision already made. Engineers moved between relay stations. Technicians spliced cables at the primary power conduits. Two soldiers with rifles in hand stood near the center of the room, their attention moving in slow methodical sweeps. The communications array dominated the far wall, its metallic dish now fully operational, surface pulsing with a deep, rhythmic blue. They had rerouted power from life support. He could hear the change in the ventilation's pitch, the system struggling to compensate.
John catalogued the room the way his body catalogued threats: not consciously, not as a list, but as a landscape that tilted toward or away from survival. The soldiers were the immediate problem. The power junction near the base of the communications array was the solution. A cluster of heavy-duty cables and breakers jutted from the wall at knee height, exposed and accessible, the kind of thing someone designs for emergency shutdown and assumes no enemy will ever reach.

Near the far wall, a pressurized nitrogen tank sat on its mounting brackets, its surface furred with frost. Large. Sealed. Under considerable pressure.
John pulled a compact detonator from his belt. He turned it over once in his fingers, confirming the charge by weight more than sight. The device was small enough to cup in one palm, and the timer mechanism was simple: a rotary dial with markings worn smooth by use.
Getting to the nitrogen tank meant crossing twenty meters of open floor. He studied the timing of the soldiers' sweeps, counting the intervals between each turn of the head. They were disciplined, which meant predictable. He waited for the moment both men faced the same direction, a brief overlap in their coverage that lasted maybe three seconds.
He went on the second interval. Three seconds. He made it in two.
He reached the base of the tank and pressed his back against the cold metal, the frost biting through his sleeve. He set the detonator against the primary valve, the device adhering with a soft magnetic click. Thirty seconds on the timer. He set it and retreated into the shadow of a processing unit, putting two substantial pieces of machinery between himself and the tank.
He watched the guards and counted.
At eighteen seconds, one of the soldiers said something to the other. They both turned toward the communications array. At twelve seconds, a technician called out from across the room and both soldiers' attention moved to her. At five seconds, John had already shifted his weight forward, coiled and ready.
The explosion was not dramatic in the cinematic sense. It was sudden and total. The nitrogen tank ruptured at the valve with a crack that compressed the air in the room, and then a wall of freezing mist and high-pressure gas erupted across the engineering deck in a wide, disorienting cloud. The temperature drop was immediate. The visibility dropped to zero in under two seconds. The guards shouted, voices muffled by the roar of escaping pressure, and the whole room became a confusion of cold and white and noise.
John moved. He was already running before the cloud finished expanding, his boots on the metal floor, his eyes on the position where the junction had been because he could no longer see the junction itself. He trusted the memory and the geometry. He reached it by feel, hands finding the cluster of breakers by shape in the white darkness.
He found the primary switch by its size. He flipped it.
The lights went. Not gradually, not with warning. The engineering deck went dark except for the dim emergency amber filtering in from the corridor beyond the blast door. The pulsing blue of the communications array faded to nothing, then to a residual glow, then to black. The rhythmic pulse of the beacon died without ceremony.
John pressed his back against the junction housing and held still. The nitrogen cloud was already beginning to thin, the room's circulation pulling it apart in ragged streams. The shouts in the room were recovering, finding direction. He could hear the soldiers moving, their boots heavy on the grating as they tried to reorient.
He had maybe ninety seconds before someone with a light found the junction and understood what had happened.
"Kestrel." His voice was barely above a breath.
"Signal terminated," she replied. "Wide-band frequency is silent. No confirmation of reception from any external source. If the beacon was answered, the response is not yet detectable."
That last sentence was doing a lot of quiet work. He noted it and filed it away as a problem with a timer attached.
The soldiers were getting their bearings faster than he would have liked. A handheld light cut through the thinning mist near the far wall, the beam sweeping low across the deck. A second light followed. They were working in a grid, the kind of search pattern that suggested training rather than panic.
John moved along the wall, keeping the junction housing between himself and the lights. The blast door was still ajar. He reached it, slipped through the gap sideways, and pulled it to behind him until the latch caught with a sound that seemed enormous in the quiet corridor.
He stood in the corridor outside, back against the bulkhead, and took three full breaths. His ribs ached from the effort of controlled breathing through thin air. His hands were slightly numb from the nitrogen cold. The nanites were already cycling through his bloodstream in that familiar way that felt less like medicine and more like being managed.
"Hull integrity," he said.
"Fourteen percent in the mid-section. The breach in Section Four continues to vent. The structural stabilizers remain offline." Kestrel paused. "The beacon is dead, but the ship is not recovering on its own. Whatever it was calling is still out there."
He knew. He had known since the moment he saw the dish going up. Killing the signal bought time. It did not change what the signal had already said, or how long it had been transmitting before he found it.
The corridor stretched ahead, half dark, half lit by amber emergency strips that had been installed by someone who understood that power would eventually fail. He pushed off the bulkhead and started moving. The mission had not ended when the beacon died. It had simply moved to the next problem, as missions do when you have not yet run out of problems, which he had not.
The ship groaned beneath him, the slow structural complaint of a vessel losing its argument with physics. Somewhere forward, in a section he had not yet reached, something shifted with a sound like a cable under tension finally giving way. The deck tilted two degrees under his boots, corrected, tilted again and held.
John adjusted his weight and kept moving.
