The bulkhead gave first.

Not with a sound, but with a pressure drop so violent that the air ripped from John's lungs in a single, involuntary heave. The darkness pressing down on the corridor strobed open with the failing rhythm of emergency circuits, and for two seconds he could see everything: the rib-like struts of reinforced titanium jutting from the walls, slick with translucent mucus that reeked of copper and ozone; the floor buckled up in three places like snapped vertebrae; a junction box overhead gaping open, wires hanging limp as cut tendons. Then the strobes stuttered and the dark came back.

He pressed himself against the wall and let his nanites do what they did best. Silver warmth flooded through his forearms, sharpening his grip, steadying the tremor that wanted to take his hands. The ship's temperature had spiked twenty degrees in the last few minutes, and even through the suit the heat was dry and feverish, rising from the walls themselves, generated by collapsing bulkheads and whatever chemical cascade the organic expansion had triggered in the hull's core layers.

The research vessel was ending. He had maybe minutes to be off it.

John moved. The corridor floor lurched beneath him and he dropped to a crawl, palms and knees, pushing through a layer of viscous fluid that clung to his suit and slowed every motion to half speed. The fluid smelled of salt and scorched polymer. Above him the ship produced a sound he had no clean word for: metal tearing from metal beneath a wet, layered rending, the structural and the biological coming apart simultaneously. Something that had been a conduit housing splintered overhead and rained fragments of polymer casing across his back.

He scrambled through a breach in the ceiling where the deck above had collapsed inward, his gloves skidding on a surface that was warm and faintly yielding. Not metal. Not anymore. The organic expansion had converted the junction housing into something closer to cartilage. His stomach clenched and he kept moving.

The floor groaned a deep, metallic protest and then dropped.

He fell through three meters of open shaft and hit soft, pulsating matter that absorbed most of the impact. A cargo crate, or what the expansion had turned a cargo crate into: a dense, spongy mass with enough give to stop him from breaking anything but his composure. The landing still drove his teeth together hard enough to click. He lay there two seconds, no more, pulling air into his chest while the suit's HUD threw red warnings across the left side of his visor. Oxygen at sixty-one percent. Hull stress sensors offline. Structural alert: decks seven through nine compromised.

He got up.

The emergency strobes above cast long, distorted shadows across what was left of the corridor, and in those lurching intervals of light he could read the space well enough to move. A bulkhead to his right had twisted almost forty-five degrees, its frame curling outward like a dying limb. Ahead, a jagged tear in the outer wall exposed a strip of open space, and through it the stars burned cold and absolutely indifferent. He registered the direction and looked away. The void had patience. He did not.

At a junction, the corridor split. Left: a passage thick with debris, ceiling half-collapsed, the kind of obstacle course that would cost him time he did not have. Right: a corridor running relatively clear but lined on both sides with pulsating conduits, fat with fluid, their walls translucent enough that he could see dark liquid surging through them in rhythmic pulses, a mechanical mimicry of a circulatory system. He went right.

The conduits pushed a low-frequency vibration directly into his back teeth, bypassing his ears entirely. The fluid moved in waves, each surge slightly longer than the last, the rhythm stuttering the way a heartbeat stutters before it stops. He gave the conduits a wide margin and kept his pace high.

The barrier stopped him forty meters on.

Metal and organic mass, fused. Wires and pipes and something that had the texture and pale color of muscle tissue, compressed into a wall that covered the corridor floor to ceiling. He pressed his hand against it and the surface gave slightly under his palm, warm, faintly resistant. There was no going over it. He started pulling from the lower left, where a gap in the organic matter left a section of metal pipe exposed. His fingers found purchase and he yanked, peeling back a layer of the mass, clearing maybe thirty centimeters before the material compacted around the gap and tried to close again.

The nanites in his hands registered the resistance and pushed back. His grip strengthened, the force from his forearms climbing past what his unenhanced muscles could have managed by a wide margin. He tore through a section of pipe, shoved a chunk of fused wiring aside, and forced the gap wide enough to push through on his side.

On the other side, the air was worse. Thicker, with a decay underneath the ozone that had not been present before. The HUD registered the oxygen concentration at fifty-three percent, the number ticking down even as he scanned it. The suit's thermal regulators were cycling hard, their hiss audible now inside the helmet, working against a heat load that kept climbing.

Kestrel's voice arrived through the comm before her mobile unit was visible around the bend, low and precise, stripped of anything that might once have been called warmth. That was the version of her that had come back after the reconstitution: cold logic, clean syntax, no hesitation. He had stopped expecting the old cadences. "John. Pod bay is forty-two meters bearing zero-three-five. I am already inside the unit. The bay door motor is drawing power from a secondary line. You have approximately four minutes before the ship's power grid collapses entirely and takes the launch mechanism with it."

"Understood." He was already moving.

A tremor hit. Not a shudder, a tectonic event transmitted through the ship's frame, originating several decks above where a massive bulkhead had let go. The roar arrived a half-second after the vibration, a deep concussive boom that knocked him off balance and sent a cascade of debris down through a split in the ceiling, heavy metal panels and chunks of organic matter hammering the corridor floor around him. He pressed into a recessed doorframe and covered his helmet with both arms. A fragment the size of his torso hit the floor two meters ahead and skidded, sparking. He waited for the secondary collapse to finish before he moved again.

The corridor beyond the debris field opened into the pod bay, and the emergency lighting here was actually functional, three amber strips along the ceiling casting the space in a color that reminded him of old photographs. The pod sat in its cradle, hull scarred from the trauma the ship had already absorbed, the docking clamps straining visibly against the torsion the collapsing structure had introduced. Kestrel's mobile unit, a compact chassis with four articulated limbs, stood braced against the pod's hatch frame.

"Clamps are at forty percent holding capacity," she said, without turning. The unit's optical sensors tracked him as he crossed the bay. "Get in."

He climbed in. The hatch sealed behind him with a thud that drove through his collarbone, mechanical and final, and the sounds of the ship's destruction dropped to a muted register. The pod's interior was tight: two seats, a narrow instrument panel, a life support readout on the port wall, and very little else. The air tasted recycled and faintly stale, but it was breathable. His suit registered the ambient oxygen and downgraded its alert status.

Kestrel's unit folded itself into the co-pilot seat with a precision that used no extra motion. Her optical array oriented toward the instrument panel.

"Launch sequence," John said.

She brought the panel up. The screen that populated was a catalog of failure: two thirds of the buttons unresponsive, two screens dark, the main launch interface cycling through an error state. The message read: LAUNCH SEQUENCE INTERRUPTED: SYSTEM FAILURE.

He pressed the screen. The error repeated.

"Primary power draw is rerouted to structural dampening," Kestrel said. "The ship is trying to stabilize itself. It is not succeeding, but it is consuming the power we need." She was already working the secondary interface, her unit's manipulators moving across the panel in precise sequences. "Bypassing primary supply. Rerouting auxiliary to launch rail."

John took the manual override panel below the main display and pulled the cover off. Inside: a row of physical switches, old design, deliberately analog, meant to function when every digital layer had failed. He flipped them in the sequence from the ship's briefing. He had memorized it during a routine review months ago and stored it the way he stored most things that might become urgent: without sentimentality, without ceremony, just kept. The secondary power reroute. The auxiliary bus confirmation. The mechanical interlock release.

The screen stuttered. EMERGENCY OVERRIDE INITIATED.

A vibration rose from the floor, climbing through the seat, into his spine. The docking clamp groans outside turned sharp and then went silent as the clamps disengaged. The pod shifted in its cradle. John pressed himself back into his seat and pulled the harness tight.

The launch rail fired.

The acceleration compressed him into the seat with enough force to grey the edges of his vision for three seconds, and then the rail released and the pod was free, weightless for one brief suspended moment before its own thrusters engaged and pushed it clear of the ship's debris shadow.
