Origin

By Murdok LitRPG RSS

Eli Falken’s life has shrunk to a cold-water walk-up on Penn Avenue, a cracked laptop, and a job board that demands eight years of experience for less than a living wage. He is twenty-three, unemployed, and out of options. Then every screen in his apartment lights up at once. The president of the United States announces that humanity has spent ninety years in quiet contact with a galactic council, and that we have finally been judged ready to join. The price is a free full-dive simulation called Origin. The real price is that magic is real, and Origin is the only way to learn it before the species meets what is waiting.

Eli says yes within four seconds. He does it because he has nothing to lose and because somewhere beneath the boredom is a hunger to matter again. But his body is lying on a floor whose landlord holds a spare key, and Origin is a first-wave deployment: nobody knows whether people come back the same, or come back at all. The system starts scanning him before he has finished standing up in the new world, and the classification it assigns will set his starting position in a race where hundreds of thousands of others are already running.

The street he lands on is old stone, packed with pajama-clad strangers blinking at each other, and every single one of them is equally untrained. Origin evaluates biology, sorts affinities, and offers no manual. On Earth, the rules of power are written by money and connection. Here they are written by a galactic council that barely let humanity through the door, and the crash course has already started.

Eli wanted a clean slate. He got one. The only question is whether he will survive the first learning curve.
