Eli Falken’s life has shrunk to a cold-water walk-up on Penn Avenue, a cracked laptop, and a job board that demands eight years of experience for less than a living wage. The president of the United States announces that humanity has spent ninety years in quiet contact with a galactic council, and that we have finally been judged ready to join. Eli says yes within four seconds. He does it because he has nothing to lose and because somewhere beneath the boredom is a hunger to matter again. But his body is lying on a floor whose landlord holds a spare key, and Origin is a first-wave deployment: nobody knows whether people come back the same, or come back at all.
