"This contains the specifications for our standard vessel designs and associated technologies," Xeet'Ta said, with that bureaucratic precision that seemed hardwired into their species. "As promised in the membership agreement. Your engineers should find the integration process straightforward."
Eli turned the crystal over in his hand, watching it catch the light in ways that suggested molecular-level data storage beyond even what the Evaruun had developed. "Define 'straightforward.'"
Xeet'Ta's compound eyes shifted slightly. "The designs are adaptable to various manufacturing capabilities. Even species with relatively modest industrial development have successfully implemented them."
Two days later, Eli and Sage sat in his workshop surrounded by holographic projections of ship schematics and technical specifications. The data had been transferred to Eden's central database, but a quick survey had already revealed a problem.
"Every qualified engineer and scientist is assigned to critical projects," Sage noted, her hologram moving between the projections. "The frigates, the 5x FTL drive development, the Evaruun fabricators."

"An elegant summary of our situation," she agreed with a slight smile.

"Or maybe." Eli paused, remembering a snippet of conversation he'd overheard between Xeet'Ta and one of their assistants during an official function. His enhanced hearing occasionally picked up unexpected intelligence. "The more advanced Assembly species have drives capable of up to 10x light speed, but they're apparently rare even among experienced civilizations. Enormous engines requiring prohibitively expensive capital ships to house them."
"Interesting," Sage replied, leaning over the schematics. "The 5x drive designs from the Evaruun are relatively compact by comparison. Perhaps they developed a more efficient approach."
"Or the Assembly species took a different evolutionary path entirely." Eli zoomed in on the engine core specifications. "These designs rely on brute force energy output rather than the elegant field harmonics the Evaruun used."
They spent hours combing through the data, identifying improvements over both their current technology and what they'd captured from the Vellarith. The Assembly designs showed meaningful advances in hull metallurgy, sensor arrays, imaging systems, computer processing, and holographic projection.
"The Vellarith could have implemented these improvements easily," Eli said, frowning at the schematics. "Why wouldn't they?"

Ryan's expression soured. "That obvious?"

Her expression fell slightly, though she covered it quickly with a nod. "Of course. I just thought, with my ability."

Legends from Eden's founding. But working with you." She seemed to search for the right words. "You're just people. Really smart, slightly intimidating people with abilities most of us can't imagine. But still real."
The observation caught Eli off guard with its plain honesty. After centuries of existence and decades removed from humanity's daily rhythms, it was easy to forget how others saw them. Not as individuals, but as monuments.
"Don't tell anyone," he said. "It would ruin my mystique."
