Why “AI smell” kills Kindle conversions
Readers forgive imperfect prose. They bounce on sameness: every paragraph opens with a name + “felt,” every transition is “suddenly,” every emotion is told twice. Common KDP upload failures after AI drafting
- Chat-export formatting — missing chapter breaks, markdown leftovers, or “Chapter 1:” repeated as body text. Fix in the Kindle formatter before upload.
- Thumbnail-illegible covers — fine detail dies at phone size. Test title/author at ~100px wide.
- Blurb that summarizes the plot — sell conflict and stakes in 100–150 words; leave twists for the book.
- Name / eye-color drift — readers DNF; run the consistency workflow mid-book, not only at the end.
- Getting the AI declaration wrong — Amazon asks you to declare AI-generated content in the KDP publishing form at upload; AI-assisted work (you wrote it, AI edited) is not declared, and neither belongs in your front matter. Check KDP’s current content guidelines before you publish — the rules change.
Blurb that converts (quick structure)
- Hook: who + the problem in one sentence
- Complication: what makes this worse / unique
- Promise: the emotional or thriller payoff (no spoilers)
- Proof: genre cues + length/series note if needed
